Lulu the Kangaroo
receives the National Animal Valor Award after saving Len Richards life
Lulu the kangaroo saved Len Richards life,
capturing thousands of hearts around the world. Allowed to roam free, yet raised by the
Richards family from a joey it was not so much bravery but family loyalty
that drove her to seek help for one of her family members. This lovely
little lady has proved once again the kangaroo has a strong, family bond
with members of it's mob and in Lulu's eyes that mob is the
Richards family.
There are five main species of Kangaroos,
the red, the eastern and western grey, the euro and the antelope
kangaroo. Lulu is an eastern grey,
these kangaroos (eastern grey) inhabit the eucalypt forests. They are
typical terrestrial grazing animals that subsist chiefly on vegetation.
We are just an average Australian
family consisting of Len, Lynn, Luke, and Celeste, our animals Misty the
cat, Buster the dog and of course Lulu the Kangaroo. We live in rural
Victoria Australia on a small property with surrounding farmlands and the
Baw Baw mountains in the distance overlooking the magnificent Latrobe
Valley.
Kangaroos are
marsupials with the female having a pouch in which they carry their young,
(they only carry one young at a time in their pouch). The young are kept in
the pouch until they are about six months old, there are four mammary glands
but only two are functional. When female Kangaroos are pursued the mother in
her panic loses control of the muscles in her pouch and the joey falls out.
Now Len spends his days with Lulu relaxing in the beautiful Latrobe Valley.
Lulu is approx. 4 years old and stands four to six feet high she has a very
large rump and small torso, (pear shape). She has a long heavy tail which
she uses for balance, On her two large legs she has three toes one very
large in the middle, one smaller to the outside and one on the inside which
is very small this nail is split in two parts she uses this nail to scratch
herself when she has an itch. Len Richards has written a book of 33,000
words on the life and times of Lulu the kangaroo. This has yet to be
published, so when it is finally published you will be able to read about
her rescue as a Joey and her life with the Richards family. Lulu the
